Man dies in N2 accident

 

Gardaí in Carrickmacross are appleaing for witnesses to a fatal collision between a car and truck on the N2 between Castleblaney and Carrickmacross yesterday evening.

The incident occurred shortly before 5pm on Wednesday, and involved a car and articulated lorry occurred on the N2 on approach to Carrickmacross, near McCaughey’s filling station.

The driver of the car, a male believed to be in his 70s, was pronounced dead at the scene a short time later.

The body of the driver of the car, a 78-year-old man, was removed to the mortuary at Our Lady of Lourdes Hospital, Drogheda for a post mortem examination, and the local Coroner notified.

The driver of the lorry was taken by ambulance to hospital. His injuries are not thought to be life threatening.

The road was currently closed to traffic in both directions to facilitate the removal of a fully laden overturned articulated lorry.

Gardaí and emergency services meanwhile examined the crash site. The stretch of the N2 at the crash site at Taplagh near Carrickmacross remained closed overnight and local diversions were put in place.
