Slow Down day "helps save live"

A Garda speed safety operation is underway across the country as the force aim to tackle the number one killer on the roads. The aim of "Slow Down day” is to remind drivers of the dangers of speeding, increase compliance with speed limits and act as a deterrent to driving at excessive or inappropriate speed.

Particular focus is on the R200 Corratober Up Dowra Road in Cavan. The "Slowdown” operation commenced at 7:00am this morning and will continue until 7:00am Saturday morning. Since 7:00am this morning, An Garda Síochána and GoSafe have checked the speed of 9,818 vehicles. 26 vehicles were detected travelling in excess of the applicable speed limit.

Notable Incidents so far include a motorist caught driving at 144km/h in a 100km/h in Zone N2, Monaghan and 140km/h in a 100km/h Zone N2, Monaghan.

The objective is to reduce the number of speed related collisions, save lives and reduce injuries on our roads. The vast majority of drivers are safe and are complying with the speed limit, with a compliance rate of 99.7%.

Gardaí say that speed checks will be taking place at other locations across County Cavan and motorists are reminded to slowdown and help save lives on the Irish roads.
