Windfall for clubs under Sports Capital Grants

Sports clubs in Cavan will benefit from €759,867 in Government funding under The Sports Capital Programme. The constituency of Cavan and Monaghan is to received over €1.36million in State funding

Across the county 21 clubs have been named to receive Sports Capital Grants allocations. The biggest winners were Ballinagh Trust Ltd who were awarded €74,603 grant, while St Felim’s Diocesan Trust were allotted €66, 602.

The two counties receive €1,365,087, breaking down to €605,220 for Monaghan, and €759,867 is going to clubs in Cavan.

Speaking on the matter Minister for Business, Enterprise and Innovation, Heather Humphreys said she was delighted the by the funding announcement: “I know that the clubs and organisations receiving this funding today will make great use of it to the benefit of local communities across both counties.

“Active engagement in sports not only helps keep young people healthy, but also builds confidence, independence and promotes team building. This important Government funding will greatly benefit these sports clubs over the coming year.”

The Minister pointed to the many benefits of funding such clubs: “It is so important to encourage people to play sport. Not only is it good for their physical health but it benefits their mental health too. Supporting sports teams, clubs and organisations is also tantamount to supporting community engagement and helps to foster strong community spirit.

“Investment in sport is also a really worthwhile policy objective for Government from a health point of view. Society reaps the rewards through improved health of the population. This is more important than ever with the rise in obesity.”

The Sports Capital Programme was re-instated 2012, after it was cut in the wake of the economic crash: “It is a real lifeline for teams, clubs and organisations across the constituency,” Minister Humphreys concluded.
