Run for your lives in Cavan

With running and keeping fit more popular than ever before, there are a number of local events taking place in the coming weeks.

First up, the routing of a 5km run or walk through Belturbet organised town Mayor Barry Wilson on Sunday, October 6 has been finalised, promising not just a unique tour of local area but more than a few surprises for participants along the way.

Cllr Wilson, who along with his 18-year-old son Stuart, is to embark on the 10k Great Ethiopian Run in aid of Self Help Africa through the streets of Addis Ababa next month, formulated the local event to raise funds for the third-world charity.

Starting at 12 noon, with registration from 10.30am at Belturbet Fitness Centre where owner Tara Millar will be hosting a Zumba dance warm up class for runners and walkers. The route will take participants onto the Fairgreen, down Deanery Street and down past Morrissey Park on the Old Clones Road before turning in along the river side walk.

Continuing on along Willow Avenue, The Lawn, runners and walkers will veer onto Bridge Street before heading right over the bridge and towards Kilconny. After Kilconny the run will take people to Turbet Island, all the way to Straheglin, back up to the centre of town and Main Street and finishing at the Fitness Centre once again.

The event will begin at a starting gantry with timing clock.

Cllr Wilson, who only began running earlier this year, explained told The Anglo-Celt: “As I keep saying, its running for Africa, not for office. Its a great event for a great cause. I think it will be a great event for people from not just Belturbet but across the county to come see the town.

“And, there will be a couple of extra surprises along the way for people to watch out for”, he adds.

Registration takes place at Belturbet Fitness Centre from 10.30pm (starting at 12-noon), €10 per person, half-price for children and a special rate of €20 for families taking part.

Run forest run

Meanwhile, the ‘Learn to Run – Forest Run’ programme began earlier this month in four venues throughout the county, Bellamont Forest Cootehill, Deerpark Forest Virginia, Templeport GAA, Cavan ETB Campus and Killygarry GAA, Tuesdays and Thursdays in the lead up to Cavan’s ‘Run with Catherina’ event on October 20.

Already over 200 people are meeting in local forests to build up their fitness to participate in the 5km Cavan Town event which begins at 12pm on the Sunday as part of the Irish Daily Mail International Rules weekend.

On the actual race day along with Catherina taking part in the race there will be a number of national and international names taking to the track such as John Treacy, Valerie Vaughan, Maureen Harrington, Christina Duffy, Ann Keenan and John Carney. All these athletes are delighted to have the opportunity to take part in the race honouring one of the county and country’s greatest athletes.

Cavan Sports Partnership’s ‘Learn to Run – Forest Run’ programme is taking place in Cavan Town, Cootehill, Virginia and Templeport in association with Annalee and Bailieborough Athletic Clubs. To find out more information visit www.cavansportspartnership.ie or follow us on facebook.
