New committee unveiled

With election fever gripping the country, it was also the appointed time for County Cavan Rugby Football Club to elect a new management committee to oversee affairs for the incoming season 2009-2010. This process was carried out during the recent AGM at Swellan Park and what a hugely positive meeting it turned out to be. The newly elected executive is a balance of new blood along with some more senior figures from within the ranks of the club. In the election of officers there were a couple of notable changes. Both club president Brendon Goodrich and club treasurer Paul Timoney along Fergal Connolly as club secretary were all returned in their respective positions. However Kathleen Dawson, outgoing Ladies Team Captain was elected to the new position of assistant secretary to assist Fergal Connolly in the day to day secretarial dealings of the club. While stepping down as public relations officer, Peter O"Hanlon is remaining on as a committee member and has been replaced by Dara Brady as PRO. Dara is a current playing member of the club and will no doubt have a very valuable contribution to make in his new role as PRO. The new committee has already had its first meeting where very definite goals were set in relation to the new season. The three key areas that have been identified and prioritised are coaching, pitch development and the social aspect of the club. Plans are at an advanced stage in relation to coaching which will have a major impact on all aspect of the clubs playing structure right from mini, juvenile and ladies through to the senior teams. In relation to pitch development, the executive will be working very closely with the social committee to orchestrate a cohesive fundraising drive and build on the recent success of the season just gone. The newly refurbished functions room has enormous potential and will play a major role in the fundraising efforts. As part of those activities the social committee has already some excellent events coming up in the club over the summer months. One of the summer events at Cavan RFC will be the Tag Rugby tournament. This is a wonderful opportunity for non-rugby sports fans to get a taste for the game in a fun and exciting way. Tag Rugby is completely non-contact and is open to both men and women. Each team of seven must have at least 2 ladies, and if the ladies score during a game then it is worth tree points as opposed to one for a male. This aspect alone makes the game all the more fun and participatory. The Tag Tournament kicks off next Wednesday evening 17th June in Swellan Park and all are welcome.
