Regretted Death

Regretted death of Patricia Gilligan  The untimely death of Patricia Gilligan, Iona Rd. Glasnevin on Wednesday last evoked much sadness in her local community and also in her native parish.  Deceased who was aged 52 was daughter of the late Hugh P and Mary Jane Briody, Callanagh and she passed away peacefully at the Mater Private hospital surrounded by her loving family. Patricia had battled bravely with a terminal illness for the last few years and on the Friday before her death she had attended an anniversary Mass in St. Josephs Church, Loughduff for her late parents.  Patricia was deeply involved in her local community in Glasnevin especially in church affairs and the local Na Fianna GFC where she was happiest working in the background.  Married to Tom Gilligan, proprietor of the Duke Pub, Duke St. and a native of Ballywilliam, Abbeylara, the family took a keen interest in affairs in both  parishs of Mullahoran  and Abbeylara where they were regular sponsors of juvenile football teams.  The parish was very well represented in the Church of St. Columba, Iona Rd. which was packed to overflowing on Friday morning as friends, neighbours and relations gathered for the funeral Mass which was concelebrated and included Canon Owen Devaney P.P. and Fr Michael Campbell, Abbeylara.  In his homily the chief celebrant paid tribute to a dedicated and loyal friend of all organisations in the community where she was a tireless worker and highly respected in her own right.  Patricia is survived by her husband Tom, children Ciaran, Aisling, Crona and Shane, father-in-law Thomas, daughter-in-law Lisa and grandson Oisin, brothers Tomas, Tony, Hugo and Padraig, sisters Annette, Josie and Rita, sisters-in-law, brothers-in-law and extended family circle by whom she will be sorely missed and to whom we extend our deepest sympathy.

Successful Re-play

An impressive start by the locals of 1-1 in the first few minutes set the scene for the quarter final replay between Mullahoran and Kingscourt in Breffni Park on Saturday evening last.  Having led all the way the Dreadnoughts went on to win by 4 pts. but not before the “Stars” gave it their all in the second half resulting in some fine saves by goalie Eamon Brady to keen their challenge at bay.  Next encounter is against old rivals Gowna in the semi-final when the new team management of Tommy Dowd and Damien O'Reilly will need to have their team on their toes.  The minor team advanced to the semi-final when they overcame a strong Mountnugent challenge in the quarter final of Div. 2 on Saturday last.

Back to School

By now all the local schools have reopened for the start of another school year and we wish all the students the best of luck in their classes.  This can be a challenging time for all, especially parents and those starting for the first time and those moving on to secondary school as a whole new routine of uniforms/buses/homework takes over.

Third Level Students

We extend our good wishes to all third level students who are off to college at this time, especially those moving away from home for the first time.  While a sense of freedom may persist away from school uniforms and school buses and home-cooked meals the transition to a whole new routine of self-reliance comes into play.
