Cross Border Lobbying Training
NSRV are running cross border lobbying training, which will take place in various venues around the border region in the New Year. Each training session is designed to give participants an introduction to how to lobby on a cross border basis. We hope that participants will then use this information to lobby for changes in practices and policies, which affect their daily lives in the border region. One example of a practice, which we feel could be influenced by lobbying from the border region is the issue of cross border banking charges and we are hoping that this training will give people the skills and ideas they need to lobby successfully around this and other border issues and ultimately to make a difference in relation to these issues.
Full details of this training is available on our website at http://www.nsrv.info/lobbying-training.
Conference on Rural, Isolated Men – Thursday 14 February 2008
A conference looking at the poverty and social exclusion issues affecting rural men in the Border Region is being held in the Slieve Russell Hotel, Ballyconnell, Co. Cavan on Thursday 14th February 2008.
A new policy position paper that identifies the services needed to respond to the social exclusion of isolated men in the central border region will be presented by the Social Inclusion Working Group of the Irish Central Border Area Network [ICBAN].
According to the position document, educational disadvantage due to early school leaving, and social isolation of men who have poor links with their communities are key issues for socially excluded men in this geographic area. In more extreme cases, there are men living in rural areas both north and south of the border who are without running hot water, central heating or indoor toilet facilities.
Those interested in attending the conference or receiving a copy of the position paper are encouraged to contact Emer Coveney in Cavan Co. Council on (049) 437 8581 or email ecoveney@cavancoco.ie
