Thoroughly enjoyable Senior Citizens Party
The annual seniors citizens party was held in the Seven Horse Shoes on 20th January. Music was provided by Dessie Ronan, P.J. Sheridan, Sean Donoghue and Sam O'Keeffe and was thoroughly enjoyed by everyone. The Leonard School of Dancing also entertained the crowd. M.C. for the afternoon was Tony Gorby. Among the guests were Canon Corrigan, Fr. Sean Mawn and his mother also some patients from Breffine Care Centre, Ballyconnell. Jim Enright, Chairman of the Community Council thanked everyone who helped make the party a success. Thanks were extended to Francis Cahill and staff of the Seven Horse shoes for the beautiful meal and to all those who donated spot prizes. It is the generoisity of the local people and time given by the voluntary workers not to mention the presence of the senior citizens themselves that makes this annual event so enjoyable.

Breast Cancer Fundraiser
We would like to thake the opportunity to thank Cormac McCann and Fiona Fitzpatrick for a wonderful evening of entertainment once again. Cormac has been with us from the setting up of “Pretty-in-Pink” and has helped us raise much needed funds for Breast Cancer in the Mid West. This year Fiona Fitzpatrick accompanied Cormac much to the delight of our two hundred ladies and celebrities. Since we started the “Pretty-in-Pink” there have been many shows along the same formula. We can honestly say 'often copied but never equalled' 2007 Pretty-in-Pink raised a handsome sum of §21,000 so we hope to buy a probe that will be useful during surgery to help to identify malignant lymph nodes. Our sincere thanks to Cormac and Fiona and we look forward to seeing them for this years Pretty-in-Pink. With appreciation from Mary, Kay and Paul.

St. Brigid's Day
The Feasst of St. Brigid or St. Brigid's Day is on Friday, February 1st. St. Brigid was a great Saint of the Irish people and her feast day was a special day in the church calender. Now it merely gets a mention in the Sunday bulletin. However, the old Irish custom of making St. Brigid's Rush Crosses on the even of St. Brigid's Day still lives on in some country areas. Indeed it is good to know that a group of people make the Crosses and sell them as a means of fund raising for Sightsavers organisation. The Belturbet First Cavan Scouting Ireland has also kept up the skills and tradition down the years. In byegone days the custom was that rushes were cut and brought into the house before sundown on the eve of St. Brigid's Day. All family members exercised their skills at cross making becoming quite competitive at times, to see who could weave the best Cross. When the Crosses were completed they were blessed with Holy Water and distributed throughout the house and into outhouses and byres as a protection for livestocks as St. Brigid loved animals.

Mr. Philip Leddy
Sympathy is extended to Rose Corby of Holborn Hill on the death of her brother, Philip Leddy, which occurred recently in Liverpool. Philip emigrated to England in the late fifties and before his departure he ran a farm in aughavilla at the top of the Pound Hill. He will also be fondly remembered as a gifted sportsman having represented both Drumlane and Belturbet at Gaelic football. There are also many stories told about his p rowess as a skittle thrower when in the forties and fifties large crowds would gather at many crossroads to see him take on all commers and usually he would come out on top. He was predeceased by his wife May, nee Corrigan, eleven years ago, and sympathy is also extended to his sister, Kathy O'Hare from Butlersbridge and his family in Liverpool.
