Allied Irish Bank have generously sponsored this annual Competition in Mannan Castle for over ten years now and this year we extended play to the Wednesday prior to the weekend and also allowed Re-entry to the competition. It looks set for a bright future too, as there were 315 entries over the three day event! Though the weather wasn"t at its best, scores stood up remarkably well in the windy conditions. Lady Captain Anne Feeney began the Presentation of Prizes on Sunday evening with praise to Donal and the Green keeping staff for their magnificent presentation of the course. The overall winner of the event was Sean Carry (19) from Ardee Golf Club with 41 points, who unfortunately could not be present to collect his prize due to work commitments. And what a Prize..!! An original Oil Painting by local artist Kate Beagan, that would take pride of place in any home in the country. Second place went to Tom Fox (13) 39 pts and Third was Dominic Tiernan (23) 39 pts. Best of the Ladies was Sadie Larkin (15) 37 pts, Mary Cassidy (17) 36 pts and Mary MacNamee (26) 35 pts. On Friday the AA Foursomes team clinched their match against Malahide on the return match played in Mannan. It was a great win in dreadful conditions. Well done to team Captain Jo Morris and the members of the team. Also news came through that the AA senior category team got a "by" through to the next round. On Monday 30th June the AA Intermediate team play against Black Bush. So best of luck to Captain Rita O"Loughlin and her team there. This week the annual AIB 50 prize event was played over three days, Wednesday, Saturday and Sunday. In tough conditions, and very testing pin positions, the winning score overall was 41 points by Sean Carry from Ardee. He took away the much coveted painting of the second hole, painted by eminent local artist Kate Beagan. Altogether there are 50 worthwhile prizes to be played for and anyone scoring 33 points up to the winning score took away a prize. Sadie Larkin was the leading lady with a great score on Sunday of 37 points. This was the best score on that day, when conditions were very challenging. Well done Sadie. Thanks to the sponsors, AIB Bank, for this continued sponsorship. It is a unique competition, with 50 prizes, and is a consistently popular competition to play in. This year 315 people played which is a credit to the members and sponsors alike. For those unable to attend the prize giving, their prizes are in the club house for collection. Next Saturday, 5th July, is the postponed second round of Lady Captain Anne"s prize. Hopefully the weather will be kinder to us this time around. Best of luck to all participating. We are all still in with a chance, and having viewed the spectactular prizes last weekend, we are all hoping for that great game! Don"t forget that Open Week will soon be upon us, commencing on Sunday 13th July, and the time sheets are filling fast. So pick your times and fill in the sheet as soon as possible. Also match plays have to be organised, so get cracking. Clones Golf Club ELAINE ELATED Last Saturday the ladies competed for Mrs. Noreen McKenna"s Lady Captain"s Prize and thankfully all the praying and putting out of statutes appeared to have paid off as the weather wasn"t half bad. Thank goodness the weather boys got it wrong! Lady Captain was in attendance to welcome the ladies in the clubhouse for a few words of encouragement before they headed off for the 1st tee. The windy conditions were testing at times but the reasonable pin position and the wonderful condition of the course suited most of the ladies and some very good scores were returned. Yes there were the usual horror stories of ladies having 9"s on par 3"s and putting balls into the river on the 18th , not once but twice, but an occasion like Lady Captain"s Day always seem to make us do things on a golf course that we would never do on any other competition day. After the round was completed the ladies headed home to beautify themselves and were back in the evening for the most beautiful buffet supper expertly catered by Maggie"s Kitchen and her team. The clubhouse was in fine fettle with a stunning display of prizes and the top accolade was a stylish writing bureau much admired by all the hopefuls that their score would be the winning score. Lady Captain made a wonderful speech paying tribute to everyone who had assisted her throughout her year so far she particularly thanked her family for being there and special friends and guests. A poem of congratulations written especially for lady captain was read by one of the ladies and then the moment we had all been waiting for the results. The winner of Lady Captain"s Prize 2008 was Elaine Hamilton (22) with a fine score of 70 nett. Elaine accepted her prize with delight and afterwards confided that husband George had given her a timely lesson the previous week and his tips and advice had been of great help. We"ll all be booking lesson with George now! Congratulations Elaine and enjoy the beautiful prize. In runner up spot with 72 nett was Roisin Kerr (26). Roisin has recently come back to regular golf and has played beautifully these last few weeks well done Roisin and keep her going. The gross winner with 88 was Mary Trant (15). Mary had a bit of a mare in the 7th carding an 8 as she pulled her drive in the dreaded OOB! However Mary managed to keep her head and thoroughly enjoyed the round along with 2 fellow prize winners she was in good company. Section A (0-20) was won by Irene Rooney 75 nett and 2nd place went to Vera Tighe also 75 nett. Section B (21-29) winner Ann McCarthy 72 Nett and 2nd Mary McGuigan 74 nett. Section C (30-36) Winner Celeste McKiernan 74 nett and 2nd Kathleen Leonard with 75 Nett. The past lady Captains" prize went to Mary O"Toole and Joy Cassidy won the committee prize. Ann Keating had the best front 9 and Doli Maguire the best back 9. Congratulations to our visitors" prize winner D. McScorley from Enniskillen Club. Other prize winners were Valerie Browne non qualifier, Beatrice Crudden best novice (lovely speech Beatrice!) and best experienced golfer went to Ann Slowey. Now the next bit you couldn"t have scripted better as the winner of the men"s 14 hole stableford completion was Captain Mr. Paul Fitzpatrick with 36 points. Paul accepted his prize and paid tribute to Lady Captain and said he looked forward to the rest of their year ahead together. The men"s 2nd prize was won by Joe Monaghan 34 points. After all the presentation of prizes the band struck up and there was much dancing into the night with the Gene Bannon Band who kept us on the floor with their wonderful sounds. A great night was had by all. Rosita wins 02 Last week"s stableford competition for the 02 Trophy was won with a great score in no so great conditions, by Rosita McCabe (17) with 36 points congratulations Rosita. Section B (21-28) was won by Irene McConkey (24) with 30 points and section C (29-36) was claimed by Martha O"Grady (29) with 26 points. Well done ladies and congratulations to Rosita who regained her handicap of 16 just in time for Lady Captain"s day. Lady Members" Cup The draw for the Lady Members" Cup was made last Thursday and by now ladies you should have contacted your playing partners to agree on a tee off time. We wish everyone the best of luck in this prestigious stroke competition which of course goes towards medal and GOY points. Barry McGuigan Matchplay Trophy The draw for the Barry McGuigan matchplay trophy has been made and ladies you will need to contact your opponents and get the first rounds played before July 21st. Now I know it seems a long way off but with holidays and other commitments the day will be here before you know it so it"s better to get them out of the way early. Best of luck to everyone in the first round and remember ladies its full handicap allowances. Learner Ladies Our Wednesday evening Learner Ladies session appears to be popular again this year with a whole new batch of ladies willing to see what this golf is all about. If you"ve ever wondered and would like to try come along to Clones Golf Club on Wednesdays at 6.30 sharp with runners or golf shoes if you have them. Balls and clubs are provided or you can bring your own if you have them. You will be shadowed and coached by existing lady members who will show you how to hold the club and swing etc. It"s a brilliant experience and a great way to get away from it all for a couple of hours.
