Around the Clubs

Killeshandra Feile 2008 This weekend saw Cavan host All Ireland Feile. Killeshandra Club hosted St Patrick"s, Wicklow and Warwickshire Girls. The weekend started with games at home between the home and travelling teams and the children then pararaded around Cavan. Well done to the girls U-14 team who won best turned out home team in the parade. The weekend continued with matches on Saturday and the day finished with a barbeque and disco for the children. The weekend was a great success and provided all the children with an opportunity to make new friends for life. The club would like to thank all those who helped out over the weekend with the organisation in the run up to Feile. A special word of thanks has to go to Cathal O"Rourke and Colette McGearty who put in endless hours in preparing for this weekend. Well done also to Conor McGearty who came second in the Feile skills competition in Breffni Park on Sunday. U21 St Joseph"s defeated Kingscourt in the first round last week and are to play Ramor Utd in Virginia at 8 o clock on Wednesday evening. John Joe Reilly Tournament Killeshandra Leaguers will play Gowna at 8 o clock on Thursday evening in Cornafean. Lotto Lottery results for Sunday 06/07/2008 in Hayes. Here in Kingscourt we had the pleasure of hosting Salthill/Knocknacarra from Galway. The players and management of this fine club were a credit to their parishes both on and off the field and simply blew the opposition away in the group stages. On Saturday afternoon, anyone who was lucky enough to be in the Park witnessed a truly fantastic occasion. With the sun shining, the place was alive as busloads of kids from all over the country descended on Kingscourt for the Div. 1 semi-finals. Two cracking matches were played out as Kilmacud Crokes defeated Douglas by 2-6 to 2-3 and Salthill defeated Watty Grahams (Derry) by 2-4 to 0-3. That evening, the Kingscourt and Salthill sides spent a most enjoyable evening with a pitch & putt challenge that was enjoyed by all, even if there was some loose interpretations of the rules! The following day a big Kingscourt support made their way to Breffni to support Salthill in the final however despite a bright start they eventually succumbed to a strong Kilmacud side by 2-6 to 0-3. Our own lads also did the club proud. They recovered from a tough, opening defeat to give John Mitchells (Kerry) the fright of their lives and were cruelly denied victory when a late penalty give the visitors a 1-5 to 2-1 victory. Despite this, they re-grouped and finished of with a impressive 1-12 to 2-3 over Shercock. All told, it was a quite amazing experience for all involved and illustrated perfectly everything that makes the GAA such a unique organisation. There were friendships and links formed between both clubs that will last a lifetime and anyone who had the pleasure of being involved at any level will never forget it. We would like to thank all club members who helped out with all the organising and running of the event. SENIORS After recent impressive challenge performances over Nobber and Moynalvey, the Seniors revert to league action this week with a home match against Knockbride in Divisions 2 on this Thursday 10th at 8.15pm. In their last match before the championship, they will be eager to continue their good form and we would ask for a big home support in this local derby. Go on, the tennis is over, there"s nothing to keep you in the house now!! U-21"s The U-21"s made the long trip to Mullahoran last Wednesday night for the opening round of the Championship. A quick start saw the Stars lead early on before the home side regained parity by halftime. However, the second half proved a more difficult task for the Stars and Mullahoran"s greater strength and fitness saw them pull away in the end for a deserved victory. Credit to our lads though who had far from ideal preparation and put in a creditable performance. MINORS The Minors are back training now and have two weeks to prepare for their top of the table clash with Cavan Gaels on Sunday 20th. Hopefully the great form they showed before the break can be re-discovered ahead of the clash with the perennial Minor kingpins of the county. U-16"s The U-16"s face Laragh Utd in Cootehill in a league play-off to see who qualifies for the semi-final. Best of luck to all involved. Division 1 Round 11 Saturday, 12th July 008 @ 7pm Cuchulainns v Ballyhaise Ramor Utd Feile na nOg 2008 kicked off a day early for the Ramor boys as they launched their Feile festival American style! On Thursday evening last, Ramor welcomed the New York boys team, together with their parents, mentors and supporters. Despite the rain, a huge crowd turned out to admire the stars and stripes festooned club rooms. The visitors arrived to the strains of 'Born in the USA' and were treated to a celebration of Independence Day, albeit a day early! It was not only football on the agenda, but a trip down memory lane and old friends meeting. Referee Ray Tynan started the challenge game when the rain eased off, and to their credit our NY counterparts showed no signs whatsoever of jet lag! The Ramor boys were 'saving' themselves for the next day, while New York were themselves 'warming up'. Apres match, refreshments were served in the Clubhouse. Visitors and locals alike were treated to a fine fare, all supplied by the parents of our U-14 team. Ramor Club Secretary Frank McGuinness informed the New Yorkers that he had received permission from the White House to bestow the honour upon them of being Ambassadors for New York for the weekend. Frank also secured the good wishes from the American Ambassador Thomas Foley to the New York team. Underage Chairman Laurence Lynch presented a commemorative plaque to the visitors, while he in turn received a plaque from New York, which now takes pride of place in the Clubhouse. Indeed, there were other presentations, and John Mulvanny was the recipient of a T-shirt from the famous NY eaterie Rory Dolans, as a token of thanks for being instrumental in organising the visit. It"s understood that John and Paddy McNamee conducted some intensive research for the trip earlier this year in New York! Fridays Events; Friday dawned bright and sunny and the Ramor Boys welcomed Down side Glenn, while the Lurgan Ladies welcomed St. Michaels from Donegal to Ramor Park. The two games were played on the bottom field, which was in pristine condition. There was excellent play from all the teams, but both home sides unfortunately lost out. Then it was time to go to Cavan for the Feile Parade, where a huge crowd lined the streets to welcome all the teams. There was lots of entertainment also, and the grand finale in Breffni Park was enjoyed immensely. Huge credit must go to the organisers, as it was one of the best Feile opening nights ever. Saturday"s Events; The party was over now and it was time to get down to some serious football. Ramor U-14"s had to travel to Bailieboro along with Glenn to take on Kilmacud Crokes(Dublin) and Bailieboro. The first game was between Bailieboro and Glenn, and the Down side ran out easy winners. Next up were Ramor , who faced Dublin side Kilmacud Crokes. It was a very one-sided affair with the Dubliners adding another victory to their account. There was a break for all the teams while the skills competition took place. Ramor"s Brian O"Connell put in an excellent performance, and was beaten to first place by the narrowest of margins. Well done Brian, everyone is very proud of you. A local derby followed, which was probably the closest game of the day, between Bailieboro and Ramor, with the hosts winning by a single point. The final game was the decider between Kilmacud Crokes and Glenn. Despite crowd expectations for a good close game, it was dominated entirely by the Dublin side who ran out convincing winners on a scoreline of 4-12 to 1-1. Semi-finals The Ramor and Glenn teams travelled on to Kingscourt to watch the semi-finals,where Kilmacud earned a place in the final in Breffni Park on Sunday. After a long, busy day, it was then back to Virginia to freshen up and get ready for a Quiz and a disco in the Riverfront Hotel. All four teams attended, Ramor, Lurgan ladies, Glenn and St. Michaels. There were presentations to all the clubs on the night and guest speakers were Frank McGuinness, Secretary of Ramor and Owen Hanratty, Lurgan Ladies Chairman. The visiting clubs spoke great words of praise for the hospitality they received from Ramor and Lurgan Ladies, and thanked everyone involved for making their weekend so memorable. St. Michaels girls were wished well in the Division 2 Final. The boys and girls enjoyed themselves immensely, as they danced to the music which was supplied by DJ Cillian Lynch. Also in attendence was his father Lawrence for the presentations and guest speakers. Sundays events; All four clubs gathered for 11.30 Mass at St. Mary"s Church, Virginia. Players from each of the clubs brought jerseys to the altar and read prayers during Mass. Fr. Johnny prayed for all involved in Feile and wished St. Michaels good luck in the Final. It was a fitting end to the Feile celebrations in Virginia, as the congregation bid farewell and good luck to Glenn and St. Michaels. A large crowd headed for Breffni Park to watch the Finals, and to show their support for St. Michael"s and for Lorna Reilly who took part in the finals of the Skills competition. Congratulations to Lorna who came second, an excellent achievement. Thanks; It would be impossible to thank individually all the people who worked so hard for Feile in Virginia and ensured that it was an excellently run weekend. Ramor Park is a credit to all who were mowing, painting, cleaning, fixing nets, putting up flags, etc. The ladies who catered all weekend ran a military type operation!! Hundreds of cups of tea were served, thousands of sandwiches made and eaten, and over eighty people were served dinner on Saturday! Well done to all involved, from the car park attendants to the catering committee, the Ramor and Lurgan Ladies Committee, referees, umpires, linemen, first -aiders, host families, and supporters, you all know who you are. However, there is one person who has made Feile his life for the last few months, Alan Costelloe, our coaching officer and Feile Co-ordinator. There was no stone left unturned in his preparations, and the huge success that Feile was in Ramor could not have happened without him. Sincere thanks to Alan from everyone involved. Congratulations to St. Michaels girls who are the 2008 Division 2 All Ireland Champions! Well done girls from all at Ramor Utd. A perfect ending to a brilliant weekend at Ramor- hosts of the newly crowned champions! Ramor Utd U-21"S; Ramor got their championship campaign off to a winning start on Wednesday last at Ramor Park. They beat a fancied Crosserlough side after an entertaining game on a score line of 13 points to 6. Next game is this Wednesday 9th July at home v St. Josephs. This is a quarterf-final with an 8pm throw-in. Please support. Ramor Underage Meeting; Next meeting is on Monday night, July 14th at 9pm. Everyone welcome.
