Mannan Castle Ladies The long awaited second round of the Lady Captain Anne"s prize took place on Saturday last. Amazingly, the rain that pelted down from late Friday night into the early afternoon on Saturday went away, and the golf was played in sunny and warm conditions. However the golf was no less easy and most of us had difficulty scoring, that is except the winners of course! And congratulations to all of them. There was great excitement as the two leading ladies from the first day, Louise Hanratty and Deanna MacGuinness, came in with 35 and 33 points respectively, which brought their total scores to 80 points each. However Louise came through on the breakdown, and a very popular winner she was too. Lady Captain Anne thanked all who helped the very unique "third" day of the Captain"s Prize go so well. T The prize winners are as follows: Louise Hanratty, 1st, Deanna MacGuinness 2nd, Rita O"Loughlin, Gross; Eilish Crawley 3rd; Cat. 1 Geraldine Finnegan; Cat 2 Angela McCabe; Cat 3 Rose O"Reilly; Day 1 leading qualifier Kathleen Fox; Day 2 Roisin Brady; Front 9 Mena Marquis; Back 9 Teresa Butler; Committee Prize Mary Cassidy; Past Captains Mary Cassidy; Amen Corner (4th, 5th and 6th holes) Mary McNamee; Long Distance Yvonne Duffy; Visitors Prize Catryna Craig (Lady Captain Castleblayney). It was a great evening with lots of surprises for the prizewinners, congratulations again to one and all. For the rest of us, there is always next year!! This week"s competition, 18 hole stroke sponsored by The Hairdresser, was won by Geraldine Finnegan with a great score of 68, 2nd was Eilish Crawley with 69, better on the breakdown from Mary Cumiskey also with 69. Well done ladies. Also well done to Gill Rouiller who had a hole in one on the 17th, fantastic. Sadly, the AA Championship Intermediate Cup team captained by Rita O"Loughlin were beaten by Black Bush on Monday last. Well done to all the team who got to this stage, Anne Carragher, Mary Cassidy, Mary Cumiskey, Louise Hanratty and Eilish Crawley and not least the inspiring team captain, Rita. This week"s competition is the Australian Spoons - Foursomes, winners to go through to a further round on another course. Also on Friday evening the mixed scramble is to be held and following that the prize giving for all competitions since May will take place. So if you have a prize to collect, join in the fun of the mixed golf and be there to collect your prize which will take place after the golf circa 9.30. More details of the Friday mixed event in the clubhouse. Blacklion Golf Club Mel McLoughlin"s Captain"s Prize was played for last Saturday, and with some tricky pin positions and wet and windy conditions, scoring was always going to prove difficult over the qualifying 18 holes. Indeed, only two players would break 70. Sean Boylan, recent winner of the Bush Cup, again showed his improvement with a 68. However, it was 7 handicapper Paul McKenna who led the way with a magnificent 1 over par gross effort for a 66. As a previous winner, Paul was always going to be difficult to catch, and so it proved as he covered the extra 9 holes in 3 over par to win by 4 shots. Aiden Wynne and Joe McHugh came from down the field to claim second and third place respectively. The consistent Danny McGovern came in fourth, and Sean Boylan had to content himself with the 'Best 18' prize. Martin Monaghan and Dermot Love battled for the Gross prize, Martin winning with a better back nine, leaving Dermot to collect the Past Captain"s prize. Dr. Hawkins, always a welcome visitor to Blacklion, won that prize. The keenly fought Captain"s Invitation for Ladies was eventually won by Mary McCabe with a 73, prevailing over Yvonne Cullen by a shot.In matchplay competition, Jimmy Donovan again got his hands on the Glenfarne Cup, this time partnering Jim McCafferty to a one hole success over Tommy O"Connor and Darren Hurd. The Ulster Sports Glass case was played for over the weekend, and it saw a runaway victory for the in-form Francis O"Reilly, his 62 a full six shots better than new member Michael McAloon"s 68. Jim McCafferty, fresh from his Glenfarne Cup success, took third place with another 68. Seamus Cullen won the Gross prize with a solid 4 over par effort. Clones Golf Club Rafferty Boys Mourne Loss Our young guns in the Ronan Rafferty Team were disappointed with the result on the away leg in Mourne last weekend despite giving a fine performance. The players did extremely well in the home leg in Clones and travelled away with high expectations. Despite their defeat we think the boys deserve a mention and they all will be definitely ones to watch in the future, so well done to Darren McMahon, Jack McCarron, Ethan Audley, Fergal Connolly and Darra Igoe. Jimmy Magee Memorial Trophy The Jimmy Magee Memorial Matchplay Trophy for our juvenile golfers will be contested shortly and all our young golfers are requested to put their names on the list in the locker room if they wish to take part. Juvenile golf coaching continues throughout the summer each Tuesday evening from 7pm. Ulster 4-Ball Team Rise to the Occasion Prospects looked gloomy for the Ulster 4 ball team after only taking 2 and a half matches at home against Lisburn recently and the team knew they had their work cut out for the away leg. Gene McEnroe is delighted to report that his team rose to the occasion and won 4-1 in Lisburn and the team progress to the next round. Well done gentlemen. Ladies on a Roll Three of the winners from last week"s Lady Captain"s Prize weekend feature this week in the prestigious Lady Members Cup. This coveted trophy is much sought after and the ladies were drawn playing partners, much like Lady Captain"s Day. Unfortunately the weather wasn"t as favourable and the difficult conditions put paid to many a scorecard. However Elaine Hamilton (22) managed to put together, what she described as an unremarkable round with just a couple of pars but more importantly no disasters! Winning this year"s Lady Members" Cup generously sponsored by Kevin Hickey of Messrs. Barry, Hickey & Henderson, Clones, with a fabulous score of 69 nett, was also the winner of the Lady Captain"s Prize Elaine Hamilton. Congratulations to Elaine and a very warm welcome to Section A after losing 2 shots Elaine now joins the low handicap group. In 2nd place with nett 74 was newcomer Eileen Maguire (35) despite carding a disastrous 11 on the par 4, 5th. Eileen asked her marker to check and re-check her score at the end of the round as she didn"t think her round was that remarkable and was stunned to discover she had managed 2nd spot. Eileen now loses another shot and plays off 34 well done! The winner of the gross, also a repeat from Lady Captains" Day was Mary Trant (15) with gross 90. Section A winner Rosita McCabe (16) with nett 81, Section B went to another Lady Captain"s Day prize-winner, Ann McCarthy (22) with nett 76 and Section C went to a delighted Maureen Lynch (36) with a nett 80.
