Lessons continue on Thursday morning with Joe Frawley for the up and coming stars and also with Cathal Barry on Thursday evening for the bigger stars. Coaching is underway for the boys on the Norman Cinnamond team, as the competition starts this week.  Great news in that the Mothers have also decided to grasp the nettle and are enjoying the 1hour lesson from 7.30 to 8.30 with Cathal Barry on Thursday nights. I wonder is it the lesson or the goodies after the lesson that is the attraction. Well done to all concerned and keep up the good work. Bent Elbow Golfing Society The Bent Elbow Golfing Society had a successful outing recently at Rossmore Golf Club. Blacklion Club Captain Mel McLoughlin won his first competition of the year, scoring 42 points in the Garda competition last Wednesday. In second place was Frank McCabe with 40 points, pipping Gerry Hickey with a better back nine. Jimmy Donovan claimed the Gross prize with a four over par 76. Open week got underway on Saturday with a singles competition, and it was new member Kevin McPartland who prevailed, shooting a n impressive 45 points. Sean Flanagan and Dermot Love took second and third places respectively, both with 42 points. Visitor Frankie Coffey won the Gross prize with a nett 40 points, with Packie Reilly claiming the visitor"s prize. Teddy Henderson"s Conway Cup side travelled to Castle Hume on Friday needing three points to secure a place in the final against Omagh. They needed to play only nine holes to achieve this target, all pairings reaching the turn ahead in their matches, a magnificent achievement against a very good team. Open Week ends on Sunday, 17th August with a Mixed Foursomes competition, with a singles stableford competition on every day until then. Clones Young Guns" Classic Golf Clones Golf Club"s own Classic is over for another year and it proved to be very successful despite the weather threatening to force a different outcome. The Classic ran over five days into the Bank Holiday Monday due to the torrential rains on Friday and thankfully all teams were accommodated and managed to get their rounds finished in relatively condusive conditions. The presentation of prizes took place last Tuesday and Pat Connolly (classic convenor) and Captain Paul Fitzpatrick got proceedings underway by thanking all involved. However Pat Connolly the Classic convenor said he would like to particularly thank Bank of Scotland (Ireland) our main sponsor; everyone was sorry that George Duke was unable to attend the presentation of prizes this year and Tom Cassidy kindly stepped forward to represent both George and the bank. Pat also thanked his team (they know who they are) they did such sterling work in staging this mammoth occasion. Congratulations go to Fergal Connolly, James Connolly, Jack McCarron and Ethan Audley winning the Ping Drivers with a score of 103 points (team sponsor Margaret Quigley). Congratulations to Clones who beat Armagh at home last Saturday in the Rossmore Cup. Clones are now through to the semi finals. Ladies Club Gemma"s First Win. Gemma McMahon(36) won"t forget her first win in a hurry. Gemma started with the Learner Ladies programme in the summer of 2007 and has become a very keen and enthusiastic player, desperate to reduce her handicap and feature in the prizes. Gemma carded a fabulous 39 points to claim the Monaghan Property Sales Trophy for 2008 and was delighted to receive both the trophy and her prize from Willie McKenna from Monaghan Property Sales. Gemma also received a cut to her handicap of 2.5 shots. Congratulations Gemma! In 2nd spot , also one of our success stories from last year"s Learner Ladies programme was Eileen Maguire(33) with 38 points, Eileen was also visited by the handicap secretary and losses and other 2 shots off her handicap now off 31 and the winner of the gross was Joy Cassidy. Section A (0-20) winner Irene Rooney 30 points , Section B (21-28) Ann McCarthy 32 Points and Section C (29-36) Celeste McKiernan 34 points. Our learner ladies continue to progress with their golf each Wednesday from 6.30pm . We will shortly be running a few competitions for them to take part in to keep them focused. Indeed it is great to see so many of the ladies already committing to the game by purchasing their own clubs. They must be hooked already! What"s on This Week Thursday 14th August the ladies will be competing in a single stroke medal GOY DRAW and the following Thursday 21st August is the Captain"s Prize to the ladies.
