Clones Golf Club Dermot McGuigan Memorial: The prestigious Dermot McGuigan Memorial Cup was contested by the men on the weekend of 13-14 September. Dermot was a fine golfer himself and it is only fitting that the first prize in this generously sponsored competition should go to the best gross score. The McGuigan family are always very kind in their sponsorship and the men"s club would like to thank them once again for their continued support and for attending the presentation of prizes. Daniel McGuigan represented the family and spoke of fond memories of caddying for Dermot in an away matchplay competition and reiterated that Dermot had spent his happiest times playing golf in Clones. The winner of the Dermot McGuigan Memorial Trophy for 2008 was young gun Jack McCarron with 77 gross. A great score. The nett prize went to Paddy Gumley with 68 nett. Well deserved! If there was a prize for dogged determination Paddy surely wins it! He was on the course for nearly 7 hours in pouring rain, it was worth it in the end! Scratch Cups: The winner of this year"s Junior Scratch Cup was Gavin Maguire with 75 gross. The Intermediate went to Aaron Jenkins who travelled all the way from Manchester to play in this competition. Dad will look after your trophy and just might pretend that he won it! Another up and coming young man claimed the cup with an impressive 63 nett congratulations to Fergal Connolly (17), Dad taught you well! In second place with 66 nett was Gerry Trant (14). Gross winner with 78 was Seamus Keenan. Clones Win Ulster Four Ball: Way back in April, Gene McEnroe formed a squad of men to represent Clones in the Ulster Fourball matchplay competition. The lads had a lot to live up to as Clones had previously won this auspicious trophy in 2005. So with great care Gene, playing Captain, selected the right men for the job to join him, they were Kevin Smith, Gerry Smith, Paul McDermott, Noel Maguire, Noel McElroy, Mickey McGrade, Joe Smith, Michael Galligan, Mike Keane , Gabriel Brady, Paudie Foley, Seamus Brady, Brendan McElroy, Seamus McElroy, John Maxwell, Hughie McKenna and Michael Connolly. The squad of players had a long and arduous journey committing a lot of time and energy to each leg of six rounds of home and away matchplay against Roepark Limavaddy, Cabra Castle, Cavan, Lisburn, Castleblayney and finally Ardlgass. Clones gradually picked off each team and moved closer and closer to the final. The Ardglass away leg was played last Sunday and Clones managed to win 2 ½ matches which was a good start in the final of the competition. The Clones team were delighted to see supporters in Ardglass cheering them on. The return leg took place in Clones last Sunday and everyone was hopeful that the weather would hold up, unfortunately it didn"t and both teams were tested to the last in abysmal persistent rain juggling umbrellas and wet gear trying to stay as dry as possible. There were plenty of supporters on the course to will our boys to a victory and they didn"t let us down! Congratulations to Clones on winning the Ulster Fourball matchplay Trophy 2008, Clones is proud of you all. The team enjoyed a celebratory dinner expertly catered by Maggie"s Kitchen and the whole squad will be honoured at the club very shortly where they will show off the trophy and their medals. So if you see one of the squad shake their hand, they have committed 6 months of their time and energy in bringing this auspicious trophy back to Clones. A huge thank you to Gene McEnroe and his squad. Alpha-Bet The letters drawn in last week"s Alpha Bett draw were LMNZ and there were no winners of the 5,500 jackpot which rolls over to 5,600. The 5 lucky dippers each winning 20 were Chrissy MacNeill Clones, Martina Fee Corconnolly, Nora Martin Newbliss, Mary O"Rourke Dundalk and Stephen Trant Gortnana. Draw every Monday night in the clubhouse so ask yourself do you letters look lucky? Bridge Back The Clones Golf Club Bridge nights recommencing are a sure sign that winter is on the way. Back to Back Wins for Ann: Last week"s winner of the ladies 18 hole stableford competition Section A (0-23) was the previous week"s winner Ann McCarthy with 31 points. Congratulations Ann! Section B (24-36) was claimed by a lady who hasn"t featured for a while so it"s great to see her back in the winner"s enclosure Martha O"Grady with 30 points. Mary in Massareene: Mary Trant winner of the Ulster Sports Trust travelled to Massareene with the Lady Captain Mrs. Noreen McKenna for the final last Tuesday. Thankfully the weather behaved and a great day was had by all. Over 70 clubs were represented from Ulster and over 140 ladies took part and the winning score of 40 points was fabulous in view of the lack of run on the ball. Mary did her best and after a disappointing start managed to win the best back 9 with 20 points. Well done! The ladies were well looked after and were delighted to meet Mary Peters Olympic Athlete who presented the prizes and thanked all the ladies for their contribution to The Ulster Sports Trust raising much needed funds for the young people of Ulster. And Finally: Congratulations to Doli and Hugo Maguire another grandchild safely arrived! Cabra Castle Weekend September 21: The stroke play winner was Peter McGee, winner of player of the year was Peter McGee and winner of the Tony Heavey cup for over 55s was Oliver McKenna. Mannan Castle At last we had good weather this week and thankfully the conditions on the course are improving on a daily basis. This week we had the hamper competition sponsored by Longfield Oils and there was a great turnout to play. The winner was Gill Rouiller who has been playing some fantastic golf recently and produced really good scores; playing off a handicap of 8, this is a great achievement. She won this week"s competition with 40 points; Mary McNamee came second with 37, a great score of her greatly reduced handicap, (more shots to lose no doubt); and third was Rita Cunningham with 36. The front 9 was won by Jo Morris with 17 points on the breakdown and the second 9 was won by Anna O"Reilly with 19 points, also on the breakdown. Well done to all the winners and your hampers will be given on the annual Kinder day. In the meantime we have to get the Winter League out of the way and the list is in the clubhouse to add your names to it. It is commencing on October 15th, (the previous Sunday for those of you who can only play on Sundays). This coming week is an open competition, and you can play on either Wednesday or over the weekend. It is a repeater so we can play twice if we want, and with the weather looking so good, it is a great opportunity to play in pleasant conditions. We don"t know what is ahead of us over the winter, so let"s take advantage while we can. On Thursday of this week, we had the Captain"s day out in Ballymascanlon, and a very enjoyable day it was too. A great crowd turned out and the golf and meal afterwards was very enjoyable, as usual. This year"s honours went to Eilish Crawley with a fantastic round, finishing with a score of 41 points. Congratulations to you, Eilish. Jo Morris had the shot of the day, achieving a hole in one on the 11th par 3. Well done to her, what excitement. And the hotel duly acknowledged her achievement by presenting her with a bottle of champagne! Thanks to the hotel management for this gesture, much appreciated. I omitted to mention some weeks back that the V-Par competition was sponsored by Break for the Border Restaurant in Culloville. Thanks to them for that, we really appreciate all sponsorship very much. Finally some sad news. Dympna McGuinness, nee Finnegan, passed away after a short illness on Sunday September 21. Dympna was a sister of Sheila Boylan, our club member and Juvenile Committee co-ordinator. Our sympathies go to Sheila and her family on their sad loss. Ar Dheis De go raibh a anam. Belturbet All members who wish to play in the Autumn League please enter their name on the sheet on the noticeboard in the mens locker room. All motions for the A.G.M. must be with the club secretary Nevin 087 7947793 before November 3. Motion papers are on the noticeboards in the locker rooms.
