55 jobs created at new Tarpey"s SuperValu

AN expansive new SuperValu superstore, incorporating a pharmacy and book shop was officially opened at the Drumalee Commercial Centre on last Friday morning by the Minister for Agriculture, Fisheries and Food, Brendan Smith, TD. Fifty five new jobs have been created, which follows hot on the heels of 70 jobs being announced for Pauwels. The store will managed by Michael McNamara and Brid O"Sullivan is the operations director. Speaking at the official opening of the 13,000 square feet state-of-the-art store, the Minister said it was a tremendous vote of confidence in the future of Cavan Town. This new store is a sister operation of the of the supermarket on the Dublin road and both now employ 120 people. Minister Smith congratulated Sean Tarpey on having the entrepreneurial flair to open a second store in the town. He also congratulated developer Gabriel Cullivan on having the foresight to develop this commercial centre at Drumalee and he had no doubt that the other commercial units would create further jobs. He said that SuperValu throughout the country was an extremely good purchaser of quality Irish food products. In fact, 75 per cent of the purchase lines in their stores consist of Irish products. 'A new outlet like this provides more markets for Irish farmers/producers and so it is a win situation for everybody in the Farming and Agri-Food Industry.' Support your local stores Minister Smith called on all shoppers to support their local stores this Christmas. The value on offer in the supermarkets in Cavan Town is just a competitive as you will find, anywhere on this Island. Sean Tarpey told The Anglo Celt that he was delighted to have the opportunity to create additional employment in Cavan Town. 'We have received great support from the people of Cavan and further afield over the past five years.' He revealed that the new store incorporates a pharmacy, which features a beauty salon and a health food area, a book shop and you can visit the spacious restaurant, after doing all your shopping. 'Our market research shows that this store will be a winner - the business is there and we just have to be the best in the business and offer the best prices around.' Good Christmas Despite the tough times out there, Sean Tarpey said SuperValu was looking forward to a good Christmas. 'There is competition from north and south, but people have responded to the value on offer in our stores. We will have the value to beat any supermarket either here or in the north'. The President of Cavan Chamber of Commerce Eamonn McDwyer welcomed the opening of the new store. He said the Chamber have a slogan this Christmas: 'Shop Cavan, shop local. He added: 'We strongly urge people to shop local - it is their local retailers who put sponsorship back into the community.'
