Aldi coming to Cavan!
An expansive new Aldi store is coming to Cavan Town and will be located on the site of the old Homemakers and Cash and Carry store on the Dublin Road, the Anglo Celt has learned. The news is in keeping with the recent expansion plans announced by Aldi for new stores all over the country. The Cavan store is one of 35 new stores being opened by Aldi Stores Ireland across the country over the next three years as part of a €350 million expansion programme creating 650 new jobs. The German discounter has reported a growth in sales of 20 per cent since the beginning of this year as customers increasingly turn to discount stores in times of recession. A spokesperson for Aldi was unable to confirm the news this week, but the company has actively been looking for a property in Cavan for some time. It"s understood that the new complex in Cavan will be constructed by P. Elliott and Company with construction work expected to commence early in the New Year. Planning permission has been granted for the development, which will comprise the demolition of all existing buildings on the site and the construction of two new buildings. The first one will be the single-storey licensed discount foodstore store premises with a gross floor area of 1,555 square meters. The second complex will comprise a two-storey building comprising five commercial units at ground floor level, with commercial office use at first floor level. The proposed development will be served by 144 car parking spaces, located at surface level. This is a wonderful vote of confidence in the business future of Cavan town by the Aldi Group and means that almost every major supermarket and discount food store will then be located in Cavan town and environs. It is also shows P. Elliott"s commitment to the ongoing development of business and shopping facilities in the area, despite the downturn in the economy. Dave Mackey, Chief Executive of P.Elliott & Co confirmed that the company has two major contracts ongoing in the middle of Belfast. 'We hope to get a decision on a planning application in January or February in relation to a building that we are totally redeveloping in York Street, Belfast.'
