Pothole campaigner to stage 24-hour fast in Cootehill

The pothole terror Martin Hannigan who has been painting potholes with yellow paint for 20 years is active again on Cavan roads and faces a court date next week as a result of his actions. Martin took his campaign outside the Council headquarters in Cavan last week. He now intends to give his campaign a renewed impetus by going on a 24-hour fast in Cootehill tomorrow (Thursday), May 21. Martin explained that wants to let the people know that he is not 'a gutless chicken' and is championing their cause. In a statement to The Anglo-Celt this week, Cavan County Council said it was committed to maintaining and improving Cavan"s 3,000km of road network. Those who can remember the 80s and 90s, when Cavan"s main claim to fame was as the pothole capital, will appreciate that the condition of the road network has greatly improved since then. 'In the past five years we have invested €140m in maintaining and upgrading this network. Notwithstanding our reduced 2009 roads budget, we will still spend approximately €15.6m improving and maintaining the non-national road network,' read the statement. In relation to the R165 Cootehill to Stradone Road, it is included for "patch and surface dressing" works due to be carried out in the next month.
