Court briefs

Jailed for six months John Lonergan, Corratubber, Cavan was sentenced to six months in prison when convicted of possessing heroin for the purpose of supply or sale at Main Street, Cavan on April 28, 2008. He had 21 deals with a street value of €1,200. Judge MacBride said he took a very serious view of the fact that he had 21 separate deals on this occasion. Mr. Cosgrove, solicitor defending, said his client was a man who had serious heroin problems. The matter first came before the court last October. 'You agreed Judge to put the matter back to allow Mr. Lonergan to continue with his methadone treatment programme.' The solicitor said his client was now six months drug free and was back on the rails. He was now engaged to be married and was anxious to stay away from drugs. Judge MacBride said the problem was that his client was dealing in drugs and had 21 wraps of heroin for sale and that was the bottom line. 'I am satisfied he knew what he was doing.'
