Special Origins night

McGinnity"s Bar on Friday night was packed for a lively Origins session featuring the talents of Resurrection Fern. "Is it always this good?" was what those of us who frequented the contemporary music session especially for the festival wondered. Resurrection Fern (also a type of plant that can go 100 years without water and still revive after a single soaking) is an Athlone band consisting of Bean Dolan, Annie Hynes, Eddie Keenan, Dave Colohan and Fishty Fiddles. The amazingly talented Bean Dolan writes the lyrics and song structures, and this musical troupe is surely destined for bigger stages, but they"re more than welcome in Cavan in the meanwhile. Resurrection Fern have been categorised under several genres including alternative folk, minimalist, indie, acoustic earth tones, experimental and more... but all the band members 'hold folk very close to heart', as they say themselves. The music in McGinnity"s spanned from trad to bluegrass, brought to mind such diverse artists as David Kitt, Bob Dylan, The Rolling Stones, The Frames and Kila, and put quite a few dancers in the mood, with all sorts of weird and wonderful moves emerging. And, if the Origins nights, spear-headed by Cavan brothers, Michael and Lee O"Brien, are always this good - which we were told they are - we"ll be back.
