Cavan fighters impress in USA
The annual Ringside World Club Boxing Championships have been a happy hunting ground for the progressive Cavan club in recent years and last week proved no exception, with some superb performances from the ten-strong local squad, managed by experienced coach Brian McKeown. Pride of place went to champion Joe Nevin, but there were also magnificent performances from local fighters Michael Hatton, Charlie Glackin, Ceire Smith and Gemma Lee among others. "I was delighted with how the week went," McKeown told The Anglo Celt on the squad's arrival back to this county. "Everyone that went out perfomed well. Joe Nevin took a title and Michael Hatton performed brilliantly, winning three fights in the Light Welter division and only losing to a very poor 3-2 split decision in the final. "All of our boxers who were beaten lost to the eventual champions. Pat McCann was well ahead in his semi-final only to suffer the bad luck of breaking his hand and Ceire Smith came very close against an American who has only lost two fights from 56. "Cootehill lads Ryan Keenan and Barry Harkein also did very well and Adam Cullen, who was carrying an injury, and Donal Cadden boxed brilliantly." Rising starlets Paddy and Hughie Nevin showed up well in their grades and have been called up to train with the national cadet squad next weekend. Full photos and details in next week's Anglo Celt.
