Ceol agus craic at the Bent Elbow
The apt sound of a seisiun mor of music, song and dance heralded the official launch of the new Lavey Branch of Comhaltas Ceoltoiri Eireann (CCE) at the Bent Elbow last Friday. Vibrance and energy were key with over 40 musicians performing. With fear an ti Aidan Cunningham, musicians ranged from the longstanding Patrick Tierney to emerging talent Daragh Smith, as well as the Breffni Ceili Band, Crosserlough Set Dancers, Lavey Set Dancers, with tutor Laura Halpin, Damian Lynch, the Dolan, Kiernan, Tierney and Brady families and lots of others. The musical tradition made itself heard in dulcet tones. "This event inspired passion for music in young people in the audience, and helped to generate further anticipation about the All-Ireland Fleadh in Cavan in August," said chairperson of Lavey CCE, Tom Fitzsimons. "Our main goal is to preserve the native music, language and culture and pass it on to next generation," said Tom, who wished to emphasise the inclusiveness. "No-one is too young nor too old, and enthusiasts of any level from absolute beginner upwards are welcome. People from outside Lavey are welcome too," he said.
