Under 21s through to final

Cavan 1-10 Monaghan 1-9 A late point from Man of the Match David Givney saw Cavan seal their place in the Ulster Under 21 Championship final following a typically competitive derby clash at Brwester Park, Enniskillen. Spurred on by Givney and midfield partner Gearoid McKiernan, Cavan raced into a 1-5 to 0-0 lead after 12 minutes, Conor McClarey supplying the goal after good work from the excellent Declan McKiernan. A shell-shocked Monaghan slowly began to edge their way back into the contest, however, and reeled off seven points in a row to get within one early in the second half. Cavan were struggling to put together any fluid moves, despite the best efforts of wing-forward Barry Reilly, Darragh Tighe and sub Robert Maloney-Derham, and disaster struck when James McEnroe was dismissed on a second yellow in the 45th minute. Monaghan snuck in for a goal 30 seconds after McEnroe's sending off but Cavan rallied brilliantly to overturn what was a two-point deficit with ten minutes on the clock. Givney set up livewire Brendan Fitzpatrick for a well-taken point and another from Maloney-Derham levelled it up before the towering Mountnugent man struck the winner, a sweet strike under pressure form 47 metres, to a huge roar from the large travelling support. Terry Hyland's side endured a nervous final couple of minutes but their discipline was exemplary and they deservedly hung on to take their place against Donegal, who were four-point winners over a fancied Derry, next Wednesday night at the same venue. It was a hard-fought battle, we got a man sent off but we worked hard, battled hard and showed a little bit of character, and you won't win anything without character," said Hyland after the final whistle.
