Mick Flannery tops a great line-up in special weekend of music

“A really nice weekend of music” is what Michael O’Brien of Origins is promising audiences in Cavan and with a combination of the cream of local acts and national talent lined up for both Friday and Saturday it’s a promise sure to be delivered. Origins acts this weekend are in the Gonzo theatre, Main Street, Cavan - Audrey Ryan supported by Ciaran O’Neill on Friday and Mick Flannery supported by Lisa O’Neill on Saturday. “I think for both of those gigs the support is going to create as much interest, so it’ll be a really nice weekend of music,” says Michael. Friday Audrey Ryan and Ciarán O’Neill play Gonzo on Friday, November 4, from 9.30pm to midnight (admission €10). Since releasing her debut record, Passing Thru, in 2004 Audrey’s been on the road touring both solo and with a band. She’s just finished her second full length record Dishes And Pills which will be released by Folkwit Records in the UK this fall. Her music started out in the jazz/pop vein and has evolved into an eclectic form of singer-songwriter indie rock of some alien breed using backwards loops, finger pianos, and other unique instrumentation. Overall this music blends together her early influences of Neil Young, Joni Mitchell, and Bob Dylan with contemporaries such as Robert Wyatt, Radiohead, Dungen, Wilco, Steroelab, and Arcade Fire. She performs nationally and internationally and reside on the east coast. “Ryan is like Joni Mitchell and Radiohead playing some kind of hybrid jazz music that- and this is why her stuff is so good - just doesnt exist anywhere else,” according to Leo Weekly. Ciarán O’Neill is to release an album in the coming months with guests on the album including Martin Donohoe on accordian and Ronnie O’Flynn on percusssion. Recorded in an old school in the West of Ireland, the album’s standout tracks include Take Me Over Machine and the subtle How Do You Do. The album is currently being mixed and mastered. Saturday Saturday’s acts, Mick Flannery and Lisa O’Neill also performing from 9.30pm to midnight in the Gonzo (tickets €15) need little introduction. Mick can best be described (if you have to go there) as a folk rock singer/songwriter. He’s an experienced performer, having toured extensively. He continues to perform in and about Ireland in sold-out venues. Mick writes all of his own music and lyrics. His original concept album, Evening Train, boasts eleven tracks telling the story of a week in the lives of two brothers, and it has been reviewed as containing “astute and sophisticated lyrics” and “strong, imaginative melodies”. Lisa O’Neill recently featured on the cover of the Sunday Times’ Culture magazine, named as one of the top 30 artists in Ireland. “She’s an exceptional talent who writes beautiful, funny and unusual folk songs which she delivers in her unique and awe-inspiring voice,” says the News Of The World”. Lisa has been working a little bit harder each year and this year she released her first album, named Lisa O’Neill Has an Album. You can find her playing often in Dublin, backed by her unusual ensemble of musicians. Brought to you by Origins Promo and No Ego Promo the events are assisted by The Arts Council and Cavan County Council. • Tickets are available in Multisound, Main Street, Cavan or can be pre-booked by calling Michael on 087-9603263.
