Carr takes a swipe at some 'uncommitted' players

Former Cavan manager Tommy Carr has fired a shot at some of his former players, who he described as “uncommitted†and “hanging on to the panel just for the sake of being thereâ€. In a brief interview with the Irish Independent, Carr - who parted company with Cavan following his team's capitulation at the hands of Cork last July - was asked what was the “best thing†he did all season, replying that “the best achievement of the season would have been beating Wicklow with two men down and seven points behind at the beginning of the second half. Other than that, it would have been biting the bullet with a few uncommitted players who were hanging on to the panel just for the sake of being there.†A number of high profile Cavan footballers, some of them very experienced and favourites with supporters, were dropped by Carr, who didn't identify the individuals to whom he was referring. Asked if he would have liked to stay on as manager, the Tipperary native replied that he “opted not to even try and stay onâ€. He stated that he did see himself managing a county team again, but intriguingly added that in future he “would exercise better judgement in my selection of teams.†With the benefit of hindsight, he stated that the “one thing he would do differently†would be to “tackle the colleges issue in a more aggressive manner.†“We were without 14 of our panellists until mid February from a training perspective,†he said. Carr's side failed to win promotion from Division Three of the league in his two years in charge, while his team were beaten by Division Four sides Wicklow and Fermanagh in his two championship campaigns in charge of the Cavan Football team.
