The defendant Willie Kelly.

Cavan town man charged with serious assault

Yesterday (Tuesday) when Thomas Moore should have been celebrating his 21st birthday, he was receiving treatment in St James's Hospital in Dublin following an alleged assault in the early hours of Monday morning. The young Ballinagh footballer, who had played on Sunday in the game against Cavan Gaels, was on his way home from a night out when the incident occurred. A 31-year-old Cavan man appeared in Ballyconnell District Court yesterday charged in connection with the incident. Willie Kelly with an address at 21 Killymooney Drive, Cavan, was remanded in custody to appear at Cavan District Court this Thursday, September 15, on two charges. Kelly is charged with assaulting Thomas Moore at Main Street, Cavan, on September 12 causing him harm. The defendant is further charged with possessing a glass bottle, one end of which was broken and jagged, and striking Thomas Moore with the broken end of the bottle causing injury to his mouth and cheek. When charged by Garda Cathal Egan, Kelly replied after caution to both charges: "I'm sorry." The defendant indicated to his solicitor, Damien Rudden, that he is anxious to plead guilty to the charges. Judge Sean MacBride remanded the defendant in custody to appear at Cavan District Court tomorrow (Thursday).
