Proceeds raised at Fair Day to help link town to Mullagh Lake

A new footpath connecting Mullagh town to Mullagh Lake is to be developed as a result of funding raised from last weekend's Mullagh Fair Day, The Anglo-Celt can reveal. Tommy O'Reilly, PRO of the Mullagh Development Committee which is responsible for organising the Mullagh Fair Day, confirmed that this project, among others, will benefit from this year's proceeds, which have yet to be tallied. The Mullagh Fair Day has been running for 15 years, and in the past five years it has raised over €150,000 for projects locally. "All of the money is reinvested in the community," explains Tommy, adding that projects to benefit over the years have included the Mullagh Sports Centre, the Mullagh Playground and the People's Park. Tommy and the committee are happy with how this year's Fair Day went but were a little disappointed with the weather. "Under the circumstances, it went very well," said Tommy. "The weather wasn't great but the crowd held up very well, although it was down slightly on last year. We're quite pleased all things considered," he added. There was plenty of activity for this year's Fair Day with street entertainment being particularly well received. "The wrestling went down particularly well with the young and not so young," said Tommy. Among the other highlights were the Virginia Gospel Choir, Brush Sheils and street soccer skills. The Mullagh Fair Day is the main annual fundraiser for the Mullagh Development Committee, which also organises the St Patrick's Day Parade in the town, as well as the Christmas lights. The local Tidy Towns Association is also a sub-committee of the overall development committee. The next big event in the town will be The Hooley in the Park, a new music festival that will run over two days on October 15 and 16 in the local sports grounds with acts such as The Stunning and Jedward featuring.
