Gildernew addresses Easter Commemoration
Michelle Gildernew was the guest speaker at Sinn Fein's County Cavan Easter Commemoration last Sunday, April 8 in Killann, Bailieboro. The parade, which assembled behind the banner of the Kieran Doherty Sinn Féin Cumann, Bailieboro, consistedof colour party, piper, marching band, Sinn Féin representatives and over 200 members and supporters. They made their way, proudly wearing their Easter Lilies, through the winding roads of Killann towards the beautiful stone ruins of the old cemetery, and to the grave of Vol. Jack McCabe (GHQ Óglaighna h-Eireann) who died on December 30, 1971. Sinn Féin Cllr Paddy McDonald chaired proceedings; which began with the reading of the Cavan Roll of Honour and the Proclamation. The Proclamation was read out by Secretary of the Kieran Doherty Cumann in Bailieboro, Julie Corcoran. Flags were then lowered, as a lone trumpet played the last post, this was followed by the traditional laying of the wreaths. Eamon Ward laid a laurel wreath on behalf of the Republican Movement, Chair of Cavan Comhairle Ceantar, Cllr Damien Brady laid a wreath on behalf of the Comhairle Ceantar, Art Corcoran Halpinlaid a wreath on behalf of Cavan Republican Youth, and Chair of the Kieran Doherty Cumann, Bailieboro, Pat Cusack laid a wreath on behalf of the local cumann along with another wreath from the cumann laid by Vice- Chair Peter Carolan. The main speaker for this years' commemoration, Michelle Gildernew, MLA then gave the oration which focused on the recent Uniting Ireland conferences across the island of Ireland. Michelle also reflected on the current financial difficulties this country and its citizens are facing and Sinn Féin's policy of fighting unfair charges and supporting citizens including workers; such as those on strike in the former Kingscourt Brick factory.
