Garda appeal as two killed at Cavan Stages Rally

Gardaí in Bailieboro are continuing their investigation into the fatal accident at the Cavan Stages Rally yesterday (Sunday) in which two specators were killed and seven others injured. They are appealing for witnesses. The injured were brought to hospital from the scene of the crash, including the driver and co-driver of the rally car involved. Four people are still being treated in hospital following the accident. The four were transferred to Our Lady of Lourdes Hospital in Drogheda from Cavan General following the crash. Three others were discharged. Caroline Cleary (29) from Co Cork and 50-year-old sports photographer Joe Lane from Co Galway were killed when a car appeared to go out of control after it came across a hump-backed bridge on the straight road. Ms Cleary, who was 14 weeks pregnant, was the girlfriend of one of the rally drivers. Chief executive of Motorsport Ireland Alex Sinclair said the rally course had been inspected three times prior to the race. He said all the safety documentation for the race was also in order. They are co-operating with the Gardaí in their investigation. Motorsport Ireland Statement: Motorsport Ireland extends its sympathies to the families and friends of the two spectators who were fatally injured and the seven others who were injured during a tragic incident yesterday morning at the Cavan Stages Rally. Motorsport Ireland also extends its sympathies to the members of County Cavan Motor Club and everyone involved with organising the event who reacted so quickly and professionally to the incident. Motorsport Ireland and its affiliated clubs are recognised internationally for operating to the highest standards of motorsport safety for competitors and spectators in line with the best practice of the FIA. Motorsport Ireland has begun a full investigation with the relevant authorities into the events at the Cavan Stages Rally to establish how this accident occurred.
