Nevin turns his back on pro-boxing

Cavan based boxer John Joe Nevin has turned his back on the chance to box professionally having signed up for the World Series of Boxing. The Mullingar man had been expected to sign for Amir Khan's stable; he even announced his intention to turn professional and sign on an RTE chatshow. British promoter Frank Warren was also reportedly interested in representing him. However his Cavan based coach Brian McKeown had expressed his reservations about Nevin leaving the amateur ranks, which would have ended his prospects of claiming more Olympic glory in Brazil in 2016. It seems that the Olympic silver medalist has heeded his advice, having singed up with the British Lionhearts team for the forthcoming season of the World Series of Boxing. Khan is reportedly disappointed that Nevin decided not to put his name to the professional contract but added: "I firmly believe that he has the potential to make big waves in the professional scene. Nevertheless, I respect his decision to represent the British Lionhearts in the World Series of Boxing and do not rule out the possibility of working with him in the future." Fellow Irish European Champion Joe Ward also signed for the Lionhearts in the WSB which starts this weeknd away to the USA Knockouts.
