Christmas time in Dublin: Festive Delights on Offer in the City

A truly magical time of year, Christmas should be appreciated in Dublin at least once during everyone's lifetime. Whether local or visiting, the beautiful Irish capital is a hub for festive cheer and Christmas spirit at this time of year, with plenty on offer to suit every taste.

If a weekend away is sorely needed, it is simple to find hotels in Dubli that are not only affordable but are also situated in the heart of the action. From the switching on of the Christmas lights during November, to the Christmas markets that are scattered around the city centre to help fill the air with festive smells, Dublin offers a perfect city break for the festive traveller. Christmas Markets Until Christmas Eve, the Dublin Christmas Market at The Square shopping centre in the heart of the city offers 50 stalls, while the Christmas Fair at the Dublin Docklands offers fun and shopping opportunities for people of all ages.

From the traditional carousel to keep the children occupied, to the wonderfully festive aromas that seep from the stalls, there is plenty to see, do and sample. If that's not enough, yuletide songs performed by bands and carol singers will echo through the air to help engross visitors with the festive spirit that surrounds the market.

Pantomimes

A perfect theatre visit at this time of year is a trip to a family-friendly pantomime. The Gaiety Theatre has hosted a traditional panto every year since 1873 and 2012 is no different. Running from the 2nd December until the 13th January, this year's offering is the long-established Cinderella, which promises to captivate its audience with a classic tale of love and destiny, with added laughs and fun-filled frolics. The fairy tale panto, Beauty and the Beast can be found at The Helix between the end of November and the 12th January, and promises to be '...a riot from beginning to end...'. It's back, due to popular demand, to impress the audience with this modern Irish adaptation of a timeless tale.

Festive Theatre

Theatre at this time of year doesn't just include the customary pantomime. Raymond Briggs' captivating tale, The Snowman, can be found at the National Concert Hall on the 15th and 16th December - an absolute must if you are able to make it to Dublin during this weekend. There are plenty of showings throughout both days, to hopefully eliminate the possibility of disappointment.

Fun on the Ice

If a stint on the rink is more favourable, the indoor ice rink in Dundrum is perfect for all ages, with skating penguin aids to help the younger adventurers, whilst iSkate offers the largest rink in Dublin to tackle. Families of four can skate for as little as €35 and be safe in the knowledge, that no matter how busy the time of year, it won't be overcrowded due to specific time slot allocation. Whether the hope of picking up a couple of last minute stocking fillers is an attractive thought or a family outing to the theatre is more appealing, Christmastime in Dublin will provide that festive magic you're looking for.
