The late Adrian Donohoe.

Murdered Garda's family grateful to community during 'devastating' time

The family of murdered Detective Garda Adrian Donohoe have thanked the communities of Cavan and Louth for the support they received after the devastation they felt at the Kilnaleck man's tragic death. In a memorial statement, the family speak as one in taking the "opportunity to thank everybody who sympathised with us during our recent tragic loss". The moving words are on behalf of "Adrian's wife Caroline, daughter Amy, son Niall, parents Peggy and Hugh, brothers Colm, Alan and Martin, sisters Mary and Ann, parents in law Bridie and Stephen, brothers in law, Derek, Kieran and John, sister in law Angela, and the extended Donohoe and Deloughery families." The popular Garda was murdered during a cash transfer robbery at a credit union in Lordship, Co Louth - just a mile from his young family's home - on the night of Friday, January 29. "Caroline would like to thank everybody who called to her home with mass cards, floral tributes, refreshments and expressions of sympathy and to the thousands of people who attended Adrian's funeral mass. "She would especially like to thank her Garda colleagues from Dundalk who were ever-present at ther home and who provided a source of great comfort and support [and] to all our friends and neighbours, who were a great source of strength at this very sad and devastating time." The kind words are extended to Dundalk Redemptorist priest Fr Michael Cusack and to St Joseph's Church and choir, among others, "for a beautiful, fitting tribute and hearfelt funeral mass for Adrian". Gardaí have yet to arrest anyone in the murder but believe that the signs are "cause for encouragement" as the net closes on the gang-of-five thought responsible. Gardaí, while hopeful that gang-members will come forward, are building a case around the five in a "no stone unturned" manner in their quest for information. The moving message concludes that the holy sacrifice of the month's mind, which will be held on Sunday, February 24, at the St Joseph's Redemptorist Church "will be offered for all your intentions".
