He may be an Olympian and a two-time World Championship medallist but Cavan BC fighter John Joe Nevin has a guilty secret – he trains to the sounds of novelty country entertainer Richie Kavanagh.

Kavanagh was in Cavan this week to film a video for a new song he will release with Nevin, entitled “John Joe Yer a Good One” and, he told The Anglo-Celt, the fighter is a huge fan.

“I had 15 or 16 albums out over the years and every time I’d bring one out, John Joe was into my music. He used my albums in the gym when he was training,” explained Richie, best-known for his hit “Aon Focal Eile”.

“I met him earlier in the year in Tullow in county Carlow and we were talking about it, I was anxious to do it and he was too so we came together and did a song. And it’s very good actually.”

The track will be part of the Carlow man’s new album, yet to be titled, which will be released later this month. Nevin will also feature on a DVD later in the year.

“We were doing a video in Cavan, I’m making swipes at him and we’re showing him training and so on. We’ll have a new album out within a fortnight and a DVD out for the Christmas market, it will be ready in September,” said Kavanagh.

“John Joe is a fan of his and it was great to have him visit our gym, he’s a great character,” commented Nevin's trainer Brian McKeown.
