The scene where Friday's fatal car crash occurred.

Woman and her dog killed in road fatality

Gardai in Cavan Town are appealing for witnesses to a fatal accident outside Butlersbridge earlier this morning in which a woman lost her life.

A garda spokesman told The Anglo Celt that a car was discovered on its roof at around 7.40am on the old Cavan Road, not far from the Jehovah Witness Kingdom Hall. He said the car left the road and gardaí are still investigating the matter.

The road was closed for a number of hours and diversions in place as gardai carried out a technical examination of the area. The road has since re-opened.

It is understood that the woman, who lived in the village, was accompanied by her dog who also died in the crash. She had previously lived in Cavan Town and had moved to the area in recent months.

Gardai said she was travelling from Cavan Town towards Butlersbridge. The gardaí are not aware at what time the accident took place and are appealing for witnesses who may have travelled that road between 11pm and 7.40am to come forward.

A post mortem is due to be carried out later today. Garda investigations are still at a very early stage.
