Council receives over 50 applications for new local roads scheme

Cavan County Council has received over 50 applications from communities across Cavan who are interested in contribute towards the cost of road repairs in their area under the government's new 'Community Involvement Scheme' (CIS).

Designed to replace the former LIS and 50/50 schemes, at the time the deadline for applications ended, April 19, the total of 54 applications had been received by Cavan County Council from interested parties.

Director of Services for Roads Joe McLoughlin said it was a “positive response” to the piloted scheme which was aimed at tertiary roads, including lanes and cul-de-sacs, with the department offering schemes from 20% to 50% funding towards the cost of the works.

Under the scheme, if 20% of the total cost in funding the scheme is borne by the local community, the local authority will in turn carry out the actual road repairs. With the 50% scheme for example, the local community carries out the work with materials provided by the council.
