Armed robbery in Mullagh, arrest made

Paul Neilan

Gardai in Mullagh have made an arrest after an armed robbery at a shop in the village on Wednesday.

At around 2pm on June 26 a hooded male entered the Centra on the Bailieborough Road in the village brandishing a knife and threatened staff.

He forced them to hand over a quantity of cash and then fled.

However, he was arrested soon after, at a nearby private residence, by a Garda acting alone, although back-up did later arrive.

The alleged perpetrator is a young Irish male - the knife and the cash have been recovered.

No-one was injured during the incident.

He was arrested on suspicion of burglary and was brought to Bailieborough Garda Station, where he can be held for a maximum of 24 hours.

Mullagh councillor Shane P O'Reilly praised the gardai on the arrest.

'I cannot compliment the gardai enough for their quick response and arrest but it further highlights the need for the retention of Mullagh Garda Station, unlike the many, many others this government has closed.'
