The request is a knock-on effect from the flooding in Letterkenny General Hospital.

South Leitrim emergency patients should attend Cavan General - HSE

The HSE is asking patients from South Letrim to go Cavan General Hospital for ‘self-referrals’.
The request is due to the recent flooding in Donegal, which saw neighbouring hospitals attend to Letterkenny General Hospital’s patients.
The HSE described the flooding as a “disaster” and released a statement asking people to attend different emergency departments to ease the “pressure”.
“The Contingency Management Group are seeking the assistance of self-referral patients at this busy time,” a spokesperson said.
“It would alleviate some of the pressure in the emergency department if self-referral patients in the border areas of West Sligo-East Mayo, who would normally attend the emergency department in Sligo could consider attending Mayo General Hospital. Similarly, self-referrals patients from South Leitrim, who could attend Cavan General Hospital may wish to do so.
Numbers attending the emergency department at Sligo have risen by 26 per cent since the flooding.
“The team in Letterkenny are working around the clock to re-establish the emergency department...
“The management of Sligo and Letterkenny hospitals want to acknowledge the difficulty this flooding disaster has caused patients, their families and staff but everything possible is being done to restore emergency services in Letterkenny,” the spokesperson said.
