Sean-Nós and Traditional Step Dancing at Ballyhugh Cultural Centre

A six week Sean-Nós  and Traditional Step Dancing class will commence at Ballyhugh Cultural Centre, Ballyconnell on Tuesday 14th January at 8.00pm and a beginners class in Social Dancing (Jive, Quickstep, Foxtrot and Waltz) on Wednesday at 8.00pm followed by Countryhouse dancing.

Sean-nós, meaning old style, is a traditional form of dancing, low to the ground, relaxed and rhythmic in which the dancer is free to interpret the music. The dancer is the visual expression of the musical tradition. Using hips and arms, the dancer beats rhythmic steps that are closely linked to the music and musician. Traditionally, a dancer danced solo on the half door or the round top of a barrel, as a result the steps are confined to a small space. The footwork 'battering' is great fun to watch and listen to.

This style of dancing has become very popular in recent years, is suitable for all age groups, and a great way to keep fit.
