Warning as 110kph icy gusts expected

A yellow status wind warning is in operation for counties Cavan and Monaghan, with the region set to be hit with icy gusts blowing at up to 110kph.

The weather warning, issued by Met Eireann early on Monday says from tonight, there will be cold and severe gales in Western and Northern coastal counties, with accompanying wintry showers set to continue over Ulster and North Connacht especially on hills.

Lowest temperatures are expected to fall as far as between 1 to 4 degrees.

The cold and windy weather is expected to continue into the rest of the week too, with strong to gale force Westerly winds expected on Wednesday, when there is the risk of stormy conditions in parts of the North and Northwest.

Met Eireann say it will feel very cold with sunshine and squally showers of rain or hail and even sleet in some parts.

Thursday will see heavy rain move in from the Atlantic during the day with a risk of snow over parts of Ulster, while the heavy wintry showers will continue to Friday with sunny spells until milder weather is due to appear for the weekend.
