How a cavanman blagged his way into the super bowl
Cavan Town man Niall O’Riordan had a 40th birthday to remember last weekend when he flew to Phoenix and managed to blag his way to front-row seats at the Super Bowl.
“Someone said I was trending on Twitter. More like trembling!” he told The Anglo-Celt.
“I came over on Friday night and it was looking dodgy. And it was raining as well, how unlucky can you be? I was in a bad form then, I was thinking 'I’m an idiot, I’m after coming this far and I’ll have to watch it on TV’.”
So O’Riordan grabbed a sheet of cardboard and a marker and made a placard stating he had come from Ireland. Quickly, a sympathetic American came over and sold him a ticket at face value.
“There were people selling tickets just to get into the car park. I went to get into a bar beside it and it was 200 bucks to get into it! I was going to go there and watch the game but I was going to hang around the ground until the last minute,” he said.
Once inside the stadium, the former Cavan Gaels goalkeeper blagged his way through to the front of the stand when a security guard wasn’t looking and found himself right behind Neil Reynolds of Sky Sports. And when what he reckoned were friends and family of half-time act Katy Perry left, he took a seat, and was picked up by TV viewers in his distinctive Cavan GAA jersey.
“I had the time of my life!” he said, “I’ll never forget it.”
