Refugee appeal hits cavan

With the government promising to take an extra 5,000 refugees to ease the migrant crisis in Europe, a group in west Cavan is organising an appeal to assist those waiting to be proceeded in relief centres across central European states.

Anyone wishing to support the Calais refugee appeal can do so by bringing their donations to  mass on Sunday where there will be somebody to collect them in the carpark. Items for donation include – blankets, sleeping bags, good quality men’s clothes and footwear, caps, scarves, gloves, soap, toothpaste, toothbrushes, shaving foam, razors, candles, torches, batteries and first aid supplies.

With an estimated 4,000 migrants arriving in Europe every day now, the European Union Executive has said that it will publish on Wednesday new proposals aimed at tackling the migrant crisis. The executive is drawing up a new set of national quotas under which member states will take in 160,000 asylum seekers.

In recent weeks, counties such as Germany and Austria have waived asylum rules, requiring people to apply for asylum in the first EU country they enter.
While Britain, Ireland and Denmark are exempt from EU asylum policy, all three are expected to join in the EU effort to help these families who are fleeing war, famine and poverty.

Pope Francis too is calling on every European parish to take in one refugee family with plans already in place to integrate two such families in the Vatican.
Minister for Defence Simon Coveney has said: “We cannot ignore the awful spectre of masses of ordinary people fleeing their homelands in search of safety and a better life for their loved ones.
“We are privileged in Europe and that privilege carries a responsibility to care for those that are less fortunate than we are.”
