More than €13m in funding for Cavan and Monaghan roads for 2016

More than €13 million in funding has been allocated for roads in Cavan and Monaghan next year. The funding has been announced by the Minister for Transport, Paschal Donohoe TD, and will allow for improvement and maintenance works.

The €13 million in funding will allow for a range of improvement and maintenance works to be carried out on Cavan and Monaghan roads in 2016. Monaghan County Council will be allocated €3.5 million for road improvements and €653,922 for road maintenance work. In Cavan, the County Council is being allocated €8.29 million for road improvements and €603,563 for road maintenance.

Speaking today Minister Humphreys said:Improvement works will be carried out on the N2 from Monaghan to Emyvale and on sections of the N54. Work will also be carried out on Virginia Main Street and the Belturbet bypass, as well as a number of other projects.

The funding is part of an allocation of almost €160 million from Transport Infrastructure Ireland (TII). Nationally, €139.7 million of this will go towards road improvement works, while €20.2 million will go towards essential road maintenance.

Minister Humphreys welcomed the funding, saying: “Fine Gael has a plan to keep the economic recovery going and ensure that we continue to have more money to invest in vital infrastructure, such as our roads. It is hugely important we invest in our road network, particularly as the economic recovery continues. In our export led economy, a well maintained road network is crucial to businesses across the country, particularly in the Border region.”
