Documentary on Bailieborough native Skeffington to air this evening

A documentary on the life of a Bailieborough native, who was opposed to the 1916 Rising, will air on TG4 this evening.

'Sheehy Skeffington: Pacifist' tells the life story of Frank Sheehy Skeffington, the Baileborough born pacifist, feminist and journalist who was cruelly executed at the start of the Easter Rising in 1916.

He was an eye witness to key moments in Irish history - a friend of James Joyce, a colleague of James Connolly and the partner of Hanna Sheehy Skeffington, one of Ireland's most prominent feminist activists. His pointless murder made headlines across the world, contributing to the growing demand for independence in revolutionary Ireland, while obscuing his role in the formation of modern Ireland.

The documentary's producer Deaglán Ó Mocháin told the Celt: 'The film offers a very different take on Easter week, as Sheehy Skeffington was opposed to the rebellion, as well as WWI.'

Of his Cavan links, Ó Mocháin said: What's not well known is that he was born in Bailieborough (though largely brought up in Downpatrick) where his father worked as a school inspector.

The documentary will be broadcast on TG4 this evening (Tuesday), March 8, at 9.30pm.
