Six FF candidates in race to replace Smyth on council

Six Fianna Fáil runners are thought to be in the race to replace Niamh Smyth on Cavan County Council.

The Bailieborough based councillor's seat in Cavan chamber became vacant when she took the fourth and final Cavan-Monaghan Dáil seat in last month's General Election, despite being added to the party's ticket at the last minute.

All Fianna Fáil hopefuls will attend a selection convention pencilled in for Gallonray House, Maudebawn, Monday, March 14 at 8pm. The co-option will take place at a special meeting of Cavan County Council scheduled for the following day, Tuesday, March 15 evening at 5.30pm to approve the party's nomination.

Deputy Niamh Smyth topped the poll in the council elections in May 2014.
