School-funding welcomed for emergency works

Heather Humphreys TD, Minister for Arts and the Gaeltacht, has welcomed the announcement by Minister for Education, Richard Bruton TD, that local schools in Cavan and Monaghan are to receive funding for additional accommodation and emergency works.

St Felim’s NS, Leiter, Baileborough has been approved for funding under the 'Emergency Works Scheme' to improve school accessibility, while Scoil Mhuire, Magherarney, Smithborough, has received funding works to be carried out on roof repairs.

'Separately, in Cavan, St Brigid’s NS, Killoughter, Redhills, has been approved for additional accommodation which will provide a mainstream classroom, with St Mary’s NS, Virginia, being approved for a mainstream classroom and a bathroom for assisted users.

“In Monaghan Scoil Mhuire, Latton, Castleblayney and Knockconan NS, Emyvale have each been approved for a new mainstream classroom and bathroom facilities for assisted users, all of which will be of great benefit to pupils, teachers and staff alike.

'Each school is currently, if not already, being contacted directly by the Department of Education’s School Building Unit with details on the relevant projects and the funding amounts awarded.

'As I have previously said, the Programme for Partnership Government states that investment in education is a prime way to grow our society and economy in tandem. The programme commits to an extra €500 million in education by 2021. Fine Gael in Government is determined to ensure that our recovering economy can benefit everyone in society.

'Our children should be number one on this priority list and it is really important that they can learn in a safe and modern environment. I am delighted that local schools in Cavan and Monaghan are to receive this vital funding for upgrade works.'
