Carrickane residents raise continued road safety fears

Members of the Carrickane Residents Association (CRA) have highlighted recent accidents in the area as further reason for Cavan County Council to continue to develop the footpath network locally.

At a recent well attended resident's AGM, accidents at the T-junction on the Golf Links Road linking and Loreto Road were raised by concerned members.
Central to their concerns is the safety of children attending the nearby Farnham National School, as well as those regularly using the route for recreational purposes, including walkers and joggers.
The CRA successfully campaigned for the development of a footpath from Loreto College secondary school through Loreto Wood on the approach towards Cavan Town, and are now seeking for this to be extended also.
'What we'd ideally like to see is the footpath joined up with that on the Golf Links Road. The last accident saw the wall of a private house demolished. You take the T-junction, quite a lot of people still have to walk around the corner there, which is blind for most motorists. There is no footpath there, the road isn't marked properly and cars can tip the turn also,' says CRA Secretary, Liam de Paor.
Feeling that even without extending the footpath, that work could be done in the short-term to improve safety at the location, Mr de Paor says a 'warning of sorts' signalling to motorists approaching is necessary.
A survey at the junction carried out by local residents found that between traffic attending Farnham NS, Loreto, the hospital among others, over 800 vehicles passed by between 8am and 9am in the morning. Mr de Paor told The Anglo-Celt: 'It wouldn't take a lot to put a mini-footpath around that corner, which would greatly improve our safety. Aside from the recent crash there was one a few weeks before that involving the wall at the golf course.
'It's a very busy road for the size of it, and too busy not to something. The footpath at Farnham Wood was badly needed, but we hope the Council can see it too how serious the situation is at the T-junction and something can be done here too.' he added.
