Cavan and Monaghan students commence exams

The Chairman of the Cavan and Monaghan ET Seán McKiernan Jnr has extended his best wishes to all the students in the region who have commenced their State exams tomorrow.

“On my own behalf, and on behalf of the Chief Executive, the staff, and the Board members of Cavan and Monaghan Education and Training Board (CMETB), I want to extend my best wishes to all the students sitting the Junior Certificate and Leaving Certificate examinations in schools and centres in Cavan and Monaghan,” Mr McKiernan said.

The Chairman of CMETB said that this year is an historic year as for the first time students in CMETB schools: “Centres will be sitting the first final examination in the new Junior Cycle format tomorrow with English. As an ETB we are delighted to be able to roll out the new Junior Cycle programme and look forward to rolling out new subjects in the coming years. I would like to pay tribute to the work undertaken by the Principals and staff of all our schools and commend them for their commitment and support to students.”

Mr McKiernan acknowledged the difficulties those sitting exams face: “I am very conscious that the next few weeks will be a stressful and tense time for students and their parents. I would urge them to take the advice on offer - to get a good night's sleep tonight, and a decent breakfast in the morning, and make sure all your travel arrangements are in place. A positive attitude and a good balance between study and time to relax and rest will help everyone.”

He said that it was important that students realise that the exams are not the “be all and end all” of career plans: “There are many options available for students of all ages seeking to further their career and continue their education including apprenticeships and traineeships and courses in our two Further Education Institutes. We are fortunate to have excellent services in these areas in Cavan and Monaghan. Further advice and information is available from the CMETB staff. It is also important to highlight the fact that our Career Guidance counsellors in the Adult Guidance service are available throughout the summer for those seeking advice and support in making career decisions,”Mr McKiernan concluded.
