100 and counting for Loretto!

Remarkable Shercock lady Loretto McCaffrey achieved a rare milestone when she celebrated her 100th birthday on Wednesday, September 6.
Loretto celebrated her big day at the home of her nephew Seamus McCaffrey, his wife Mary and family members PJ, Stephen and Ciara, with whom she shared her recent years.
In a note enclosed with a handsome cheque, President Higgins said, “You have witnessed remarkable change in lifestyles and technological developments unimaginable at the time of your birth in 1917.”
Well, a 2017 tribute to Loretto would have to record how this extraordinary Cavan woman mastered and embraced those great changes perhaps better than anyone else born in that era.
From the time that she developed the Caravan Park at Lough Sillan, the first fully serviced amenity of its time, right through to holding down a responsible administrative job in Gilmore’s of Kingcourt up to her early 90s, Loretto’s life was one of great achievement and service to her community.
A great lady, happily still able to enjoy a fine quality of life within the loving support of her family and carers.
