Hughs end wait for JFC crown

Drumalee 2-11
Ballymachugh 0-13

Ballymachugh won their first JFC title in impressive fashion as they overcame Drumalee in this well-contested decider.

The Hughs, who had lost two junior finals in the last three years, made no mistake here as second-half goals from Man of the Match James Kiernan and James Smith sealed their victory.

Once veteran Richie Fitzsimons edged Stephen Baxter’s side in front with a free in the 22nd minute, Ballymachugh held on to their lead and approaching the home straight, they had stretched it to seven.

Another excellent Fitzsimons point made it 0-6 to 0-3 and the same man soon added another and with Kiernan tacking on a free, Ballymachugh were in front by 0-8 to 0-3 at the break.

Playing against the wind in the second half, they got the best possible start when a great run from Padraig Galligan created a chance for James Kiernan to palm home.

Further scores from Fitzsimons and James Smith extended their advantage and despite a strong Drumalee finish, with John O’Connor, Cian Byrne and sub Sean O’Kane adding scores, Ballymachugh deservedly took the win.
