Cavan braces itself for high winds

A Status Orange weather warning has been issued for counties Donegal, Galway, Mayo, Sligo, Clare and Kerry for later this week. Met Éireann has issued a Yellow alert for Cavan as the high winds are set to hit tomorrow[Thursday] night.

The metrological service issued the Orange Wind Warning as Storm Callum looks set to hit the country.

An Orange Wind Warning can produce winds which may gust to between 110 and 130 km/h. The strongest winds will be along exposed coastal areas.

Mert Éireann said: “It is vital that the recipient of such a warning is prepared for the potential impacts of such an event.”

The weather warning will come into effect at 11pm on Thursday night and will remain in place until 9pm on Friday night.

A Status Yellow advisory has been issued as high winds and heavy rainfall are to hit Carlow, Kildare, Kilkenny, Laois, Longford, Offaly, Westmeath, Cavan, Monaghan, Leitrim, Roscommon, Limerick and Tipperary.

The band of stormy weather will bring a risk of coastal flooding to the west of the country while a separate area of low pressure could bring heavy rainfall to the east at the weekend.
