UPDATE: GSOC called to investigate Blayney incident

 

Garda Síochána Ombudsman Commission has been called into to investigate an incident after a man died and a garda injured following an incident in the town of Castleblaney, Co. Monaghan last night.

Following last night’s fatal traffic collision Gardaí say they have referred the matter to the Garda Síochána Ombudsman Commission.

Section 102 of the Garda Síochána Act, 2005 provides for independent investigation of any matter that appears to indicate that the conduct of a member of the Garda Síochána may have resulted in the death of, or serious harm to, a person.

GSOC are understood to have deployed a team of investigators to the scene and an examination of the incident continues.

The investigation into the incident continues to be carried out by An Garda Síochána.

A man in his 40s has been arrested and is currently in custody after a Garda attempted to stop a silver Audi A6 close to Castleblaney Garda Station shortly before 11.30pm on Tuesday, November 27.

However, the silver-coloured Audi drove off, dragging the member of An Garda Siochana for about 500 metres, before crashing into another car, a Skoda Octavia, on Main Street.

The driver of the Skoda, a man in his 40s, was subsequently pronounced dead at the scene.

His body has been taken to Our Lady of Lourdes Hospital Drogheda where a post mortem examination will be carried out by the State Pathologist.

The garda meanwhile, a man in his late 20s, is being treated for facial, head and leg injuries, also at Our Lady of Lourdes Hospital in Drogheda.

The driver of the silver Audi is currently being detained at Carrickmacross Garda Station under Section 4 of the Criminal Justice Act, 1984.

The road at Main Street is presently closed to facilitate an examination of the area by Garda Forensic Collision Investigators and Crime Scene Examiners.

Local diversions are in place.
