Burning on the roadside.

Roadside burning reported to council

Motorists on the realigned N55 were shocked on Wednesday morning at the sight of a roadside fire of construction material. The incineration of pallets and plastic resulted in thick heavy smoke blowing across the main road.

One motorist, a student from Mullahoran who gave her name to the Celt but did not want to be identified in the article, recounted her experience: “Pallets and plastic were burning at the side of the road at 10 o'clock in the morning. One of the big red road barriers that were used [in the construction of the road] was being burned in the fire.”

She also expressed annoyance at pollution along roadsides in the county generally.

The young woman said she contacted the council's environment office about the burning: “I reported the incident to Cavan County Council. I don't like to be a busy body, but this morning was the last straw.”

The contract to construct the N55 Corduff to South of Killydoon Realignment Scheme, Section A was awarded to Fox Building and Engineering Ltd. The construction contract works started on site in June 2017, finishing at the end of last year.

Fox Building contracts have yet to respond to a query on the matter to The Anglo-Celt.
